Thesis Title: All the Reason in the World
About
My research focuses primarily on reasons and the justification of our actions and attitudes. I've written a number of papers in defense of the view that the justification of our attitudes is nearly always contingent upon features of the external environment. The right to believe and act on our beliefs depends upon good luck and fortune more often than not.
I'm also interested in issues in the philosophy of mind having to do with self-knowledge, the contents of our thoughts, and the nature of intentional action.
At present, I'm working on reasons for action. I defend the view that (normative) reasons are the facts/states of affairs we take to favor the things we decide to do. I'm tempted to defend a similar view about motivating reasons, but I still can't decide whether normative and motivating reasons belong to the same ontological category.
